8×10 vs 12×16 Print Size: What's the Difference?
If you sell printable wall art on Etsy, you may wonder whether you need both 8×10 and 12×16 files. They differ in physical size and aspect ratio: 8×10 is 4:5, while 12×16 is 3:4. Prepare them as separate ratios to fill each frame without distortion.
8×10 vs 12×16 at a glance
| 8×10 | 12×16 | |
|---|---|---|
| Print dimensions | 8 × 10 inches | 12 × 16 inches |
| Aspect ratio | 4:5 | 3:4 |
| Pixels at 300 DPI | 2400 × 3000 | 3600 × 4800 |
| Common use | Standard wall and photo frames | Larger wall art |
| ReZise ratio | 4:5 | 3:4 |
The key difference is the aspect ratio. You cannot simply scale an 8×10 file up to 12×16 and keep the artwork undistorted, because 4:5 and 3:4 have different proportions.
What is the difference between 8×10 and 12×16?
An 8×10 print is slightly wider in proportion than a 12×16 print. An 8×10 uses a 4:5 ratio, while 12×16 uses a 3:4 ratio.
To adapt a 4:5 image to 3:4, you can crop some of the artwork, fit the complete artwork with a border, or recompose the image. Avoid stretching the artwork to force it into the new shape, as that can make people and objects look distorted.
Can you put an 8×10 print in a 12×16 frame?
Yes—with a mat. A 12×16 frame can display an 8×10 print when you use a mat with an 8×10 opening. The mat creates a clean border around the artwork and holds it in position. Without a mat, an 8×10 print will sit loose inside the larger frame with visible space around it.
12×16 frame + 8×10 mat opening + 8×10 print = a suitable framed display.
Can you put a 12×16 print in an 8×10 frame?
No. A 12×16 print is physically larger than an 8×10 frame. It would need to be cropped or printed at a smaller size to fit.

Which is better for Etsy printable wall art?
Neither size is automatically better; they serve different ratio families. The 4:5 format includes 4×5, 8×10, 16×20, and 24×30. The 3:4 format includes 6×8, 9×12, 12×16, and 18×24.
Offering both ratios gives Etsy buyers more frame options. You do not necessarily need a separate file for every physical size within a ratio: one correctly prepared ratio can cover multiple print sizes, provided the image has enough pixels for the size being printed.

How ReZise handles 8×10 and 12×16
Upload your artwork once and create both formats from the same project. Select 4:5 for 8×10 and 3:4 for 12×16, then adjust each crop independently. The framing that works for one ratio may not work for the other.
Drag into position
Move the artwork in each ratio’s preview to keep faces, text, and important details where you want them.
Zoom for a closer view
Zoom in to highlight a portrait, flower, or other detail, or use a wider view to show more of the composition.
Check print quality
Review the resolution readout. A larger print needs more source pixels to reach the same pixel density.
At 300 DPI, 8×10 needs 2400 × 3000 pixels and 12×16 needs 3600 × 4800 pixels. ReZise checks whether the artwork has enough resolution for the selected print size. A larger target does not create detail that is missing from the original image.

8×10 vs 12×16: Which one should you choose?
Choose 8×10 if:
- Your artwork works well in a 4:5 composition.
- You want to support standard 8×10 frames.
- You want to offer the 4:5 family of sizes.
Choose 12×16 if:
- Your artwork works well in a 3:4 composition.
- You want to offer a larger print.
- You want to support the 3:4 family of sizes.
Offer both if your artwork looks good in both ratios. Do not force an artwork into a format if the crop harms the composition; a thoughtful version in one ratio is better than a poor crop just to include another size.
