How to Handle Custom Print Size Requests on Etsy

A buyer asks for a different print size. Reopen the saved artwork, prepare the right shape, check the pixels, and deliver a file that matches what you agreed.

ReZise custom formats are aspect ratios, not physical-unit fields. Convert the requested dimensions to a width-to-height ratio first, then check whether the artwork can support the buyer’s intended print size.

Open your saved artwork

First, clarify what the buyer needs

Before making a file, confirm the finished print width and height, the units, portrait or landscape orientation, and whether the buyer wants the image to fill the frame or fit completely inside it. Ask whether they have a frame opening or a mat, since those can change the visible area.

Example buyer message: “Could I get this artwork at 30 × 40 cm, portrait, with the whole image visible?” That request gives you physical dimensions, orientation, and a fit preference to confirm before exporting.

Agree on the file format, delivery timing, and any price or order details through the appropriate Etsy process before you begin. Keep the conversation and transaction on Etsy, and follow the current rules for your listing and order type.

How to prepare the custom print size in ReZise

  1. 1. Open the saved artwork project

Sign in to ReZise and open the project for the Etsy design. A saved project lets you return to the original artwork and prepare another output without starting the setup over. Check that you have selected the correct design before changing its outputs.

  2. 2. Work out the requested aspect ratio

Divide width and height by their greatest common factor to reduce them to a ratio. For 30 × 40 cm, divide both by 10: the requested shape is 3:4. The measurement units cancel, so the same ratio applies whether the buyer gave inches or centimetres.

  3. 3. Add a custom format

In the project’s custom ratio controls, enable the custom format and enter the reduced width and height values, such as 3 and 4. ReZise uses these values to define the composition’s shape. They are not centimetres or inches, and do not by themselves set a physical print dimension.

  4. 4. Review the crop or fit

Check the custom-format preview. Reposition or adjust the crop so faces, lettering, borders, and important details remain visible. If the buyer asked to keep the whole image, use the fit option where available and explain that fitting may leave space or a border around the artwork.

  5. 5. Check the export and save your changes

Wait for the project to show that its settings are saved. Review the export pixel dimensions and maximum print size at 300 DPI, then download the custom output. Open the file and inspect the crop before sending it.

Ratio and resolution are two different checks

A custom ratio makes the image the right shape. It does not guarantee that the file contains enough pixels for the requested physical print. For example, 30 × 40 cm is about 11.81 × 15.75 inches. At 300 PPI, that size calls for roughly 3,543 × 4,724 pixels.

Check the generated output’s pixel dimensions against the requested size. Cropping or zooming can reduce the pixels available, and a small original cannot always produce a sharp large print. If the output does not support the requested dimensions at the quality you are willing to deliver, tell the buyer before completing the order. Offer a smaller size or ask for a higher-resolution source if appropriate; don’t promise detail the file cannot provide.

maximum print inches = output pixels ÷ 300

Example: 3,600 × 4,800 pixels supports about 12 × 16 inches at 300 PPI.

ReZise reports the output dimensions and maximum print size at 300 DPI, and can flag low resolution for the selected format. Treat this as a pixel-density check, not a guarantee of print quality from every printer, paper, or service.

Deliver the new file to the buyer

Use the Etsy order flow that matches how the custom work was purchased. If this is a made-to-order digital order, Etsy’s current instructions are to open Shop Manager, go to Orders, choose the order, select Complete order, upload the finished file, and complete the order. Etsy then notifies the buyer that the download is available.

Before uploading, choose a clear filename such as blue-botanical__ratio_custom-3x4__3543x4724.jpg, confirm that the file matches what you agreed, and make sure it fits Etsy’s current upload requirements. Keep the original project and a copy of the delivered output in your own records.

See Etsy’s guide to managing digital listings for the latest made-to-order delivery steps and file limits.

Before marking it complete: verify the dimensions and crop, check that the file opens, and confirm that the delivered file corresponds to the agreed request.

Keep your artwork ready

Return to a saved design when the next request comes in

Reopen a project, prepare another ratio, review its crop and resolution, then export the file you need.
